Campus and Facilities
The university’s main campus, situated southeast of York, spans approximately 200 hectares. In 2009, the university expanded with the opening of the Heslington East campus, which now houses additional colleges, academic departments, conference facilities, a sports village, and a business incubator. Collegiate System
York operates a collegiate system, with each student belonging to one of its nine colleges. The most recent addition, Constantine College, was established in 2014, named after Emperor Constantine I, who was proclaimed Augustus in York in 306 AD. Plans are underway to develop two more colleges in the near future.

As a member of the Russell Group, the University of York is recognized for its intensive research activities. In the 2024 Research Excellence Framework, it was ranked 12th in the UK for research quality and 24th for research power. Nationally, the university consistently ranks among the top institutions, securing the 22nd position in The Times, 12th in The Guardian, and 21st in The Complete University Guide for 2019. Globally, it was placed 134th in the 2019 QS World University Rankings and between 301st and 400th in the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
